What is IVF?
IVF is an acronym for in vitro fertilization ('in vitro' meaning 'in glass'). Simply put IVF is adding a man's sperm to his female partner’s eggs in the laboratory to produce embryos. In vitro fertilization is an option for many couples who cannot conceive through conventional therapies. These embryos are put back into the female partner's uterus (womb) after 3 to 5 days of being in the incubator, hopefully they will then grow into a baby. The reasons IVF is done include - poor sperm quality and/or quantity, obstructions between the egg and sperm, ovulation problems, and sperm-egg interaction problems. These problems can prevent couples having a baby naturally, and IVF helps to solve this.

Specific conditions that might require IVF include:

  • Tubal blockage or failed tubal reversal
  • Endometriosis
  • Cervical factor
  • Pelvic adhesions
  • Male factor
  • Unexplained infertility/ failed conventional therapy
  • Genetic testing (PGD) for inheritable diseases
  • Genetic testing (PGD) for possible reasons for multiple miscarriages
The first IVF baby was Louise Brown, born at 11:47 p.m. on July 25, 1978 at Oldham General Hospital, Oldham, England through a planned caesarean section. She weighed 5 pounds, 12 ounces (2.608 kg) at birth. Dr. Patrick Steptoe, a gynecologist at Oldham General Hospital, and Dr. Robert Edwards, a physiologist at Cambridge University, had been actively working on finding an alternative solution for conception since 1966.

IVF Procedure for Baby Hopefuls :

Infertility is the incapability of a couple to conceive (irrespective of reason) following a year of having sex without protection (no contraception).

Infertility afflicts around six million individuals in the U.S., around ten percent of males & females in their childbearing years. In vitro fertilization or IVF procedure was firstly deployed in the eighties in the U.S. & over two lakh test tube babies have been born with due credit to it. Below five percent of couples faced with infertility essentially opt for IVF.

IVF procedure is a technique of assisted reproduction offering infertile pairs an opportunity to bear children that are biologically linked to them. This technique is generally the preferred option for females suffering from blockage, severe damage or absence of fallopian tubes. Women suffering from endometriosis or male infertility factors like lower sperm numbers are also situations whenIVF procedure is sought. Any couple who basically failed in conceiving & have tried several infertility procedures but to no avail could opt for IVF.

Aspects to be considered:

  • Females below thirty-five years of age that are not facing sperm-related issues of their mates could go for IVF.
  • Usually, among females that used IVF procedure for establishing live births, around sixty-three percent are
solo infants, thirty-two percent are twin births & five percent are triplet, quadruplets or more.
  • An IVF cycle would be costing anywhere between twelve to thirteen thousand dollars.
  • When a female has opted for IVF, the need for her undergoing surgical procedure for fallopian tube repair
does not arise. It is approximated that the IVF method has been the reason for drop in the numbers of
such surgical procedures by almost fifty percent.
  • Researches indicate that IVF is risk-free. A latest trial covering almost a thousand kids delivered via such
techniques in five nations in Europe noted that on monitoring them since delivery onwards till five years of
age they were in good health alike those delivered through natural conception. But, some trials have uncovered
a slight increase in risk for heritable conditions among kids conceived via assisted reproduction methods.

IVF is well-identified globally to treat infertility and here is a step-by-step guide to what actually transpires.

  • The female might be offered some hormonal medications to facilitate ovarian stimulation for producing
many eggs prior to their removal.
  • The doctor would then introduce a needle via the vaginal area inside the ovary of the female for removing
the eggs. Such a method was earlier conducted with laparoscopy surgery, though the needle method is
comparatively lesser-invasive & lesser complicated. Anesthetizing (general) isn’t needed for this
segment of the method, though women must be offered some sedation drug.
  • Extracted fluid is then analysed in a lab to ensure egg presences.
  • During the analogous instant, semen sample is taken from the male partner and advised on
restraining from maintaining sexual relations for some days prior to egg retrieval from the female &
prior to him ejaculating for the semen sample (generally via masturbating). Separation of the sperms is
done from the rest of the ejaculated matter in a lab method.
  • The live sperms are then coalesced in the lab plate along with the eggs.
  • Around eighteen hours later, determination of whether fertilization of egg/s has been successful & commenced
growing as embryos is done. They are then placed in incubation & monitored for the subsequent two to three
    days or more.
  • The physician would then be transferring the embryos inside the uterine region via cervix using a fine,
bendable tube (catheter). The female is required to stay as immobile as possible for the subsequent hour or
    more.
  • The woman is then offered some hormones to be taken for the subsequent fortnight. In case implantation
has been successful (egg/s has latched on to the wall of the uterus & started growing) then outcome of the
pregnancy testing kit would be affirmative.

IVF Success Rates

Conception rate age-wise is analogous to that in normal conception gestations – thirty-seven percent in females under thirty-five years of age & twenty-eight percent for women in the age band of thirty-six and thirty-nine years old. Conception rate is around thirteen percent among women more than forty years of age and rarely the case for those over forty-four years old.

Sperm/Egg Donor

Sperm or egg donation or also cryopreserved embryo could be an option in IVF if any one of the partners is incapable of producing eggs or sperms. At times, eggs are retrieved from some female in case receiver is suffering ovarian impairment or having a heritable condition which could be transmitted to her child. Egg donors might be unknown or identified like blood relations or someone. Donor age is ideally twenty-one to thirty years and egg removal done analogous as IVF. The receiver would be taking higher estrogen dosages for synchronizing her hormonal levels to prep for embryo transferring procedure. Among females whose husbands or mates have lesser sperm numbers or sperm impairment then sperm donation could be an option generally taken from sperm banks where anonymity might or might not be the case. Many men might be storing their sperms when they anticipate issues with some medical procedure which impact his sperms in the future. Receipt of donor embryos (generally from a freeze-preserved embryo developed in a lab from a couple) is also an option in IVF.
